ESSAY CONTEST - Young Adult Poverty

During the spring of 2005 Eastern Idaho High School Seniors were invited to participate in an essay contest that focused on the high rate of poverty for young adults in Idaho between the ages of 18 and 25 years. Students were asked to explain this problem, identify existing programs and to suggest new interventions, and to indicate how they personally plan to stay out of poverty.

Winners of this contest were awarded a cash prize and a plaque of recognition at the 3rd Annual Partners for Prosperity Multicultural Festival held on May 19, 2005. Information gathered from these essays has been shared with Idaho Kids Count and will be included in a series of white papers exploring issues related to poverty and the transition into adulthood. Numbers, rather than names, have been used to identify each paper submitted to ensure the anonymity of the participants. These are the actual papers submitted for this contest.

Research is important in poverty reduction efforts and there are direct links to poverty reduction:

  • In order to affect systems change there has to be an understanding of the system and the potential consequences policies have for people in poverty. Research gives P4P the ammunition to advocate on behalf of people in poverty.
  • Research enables the RPTF to make informed decisions about program facilitation and development.
  • Research will keep the initiative at a grass roots level by listening to the voices of people in poverty and linking strategies and actions to the people.
  • In order to provide technical assistance throughout the region as well as to multiple stakeholders, P4P needs to understand the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and perceived threats in the community—and their dynamic nature.
  • Research enables P4P to share knowledge and become a regional clearinghouse of poverty information.
